About GrantorAI
An AI-powered grant writing assistant that helps researchers turn ideas into well-structured, competitive proposals, in days rather than weeks.
Why I created this
My name is Matthijs Cluitmans. I'm a researcher at Maastricht University, and I've spent a large part of my career writing grant proposals. Although I've got a reasonable number of grants now, the vast majority of my proposals was rejected.
I built GrantorAI because I needed it. Chatbots helped with drafting, but they lose context over a multi-section proposal. I wanted a tool that understands the funder's requirements, helps you align your science with their priorities, and gives you structured feedback at any stage of the writing process.
The goal isn't more proposals: it's fewer, stronger ones, and a more level playing field for researchers who don't have the institutional support or native-language advantage to compete on equal terms.
How it works
Upload the grant call
Upload the grant call and submission form. GrantorAI reads the documents and extracts the funder's requirements, evaluation criteria, and priorities.
Add your ideas
Describe your research plans and key arguments in your own words. Rough notes, bullet points, a stream of thought: any format works. The AI will reorganise and structure your input.
Generate content
The AI drafts proposal sections that align your ideas with the funder's requirements, using the funder's own terminology and structure. You can also write sections yourself with the AI's guidance and tips.
Get feedback & scores
AI-powered feedback evaluates your draft against the call's criteria. Get per-section scores, a holistic assessment, and actionable suggestions, so you know exactly where to strengthen your proposal.
Iterate and refine
Edit, add instructions for the AI, regenerate sections, and request new feedback. Repeat until your proposal is where it needs to be.

Collaboration & editing
Commenting
Share your proposal with colleagues and co-PIs. They can leave comments on individual sections, without needing a paid account.
Tracked changes
Invite collaborators to make edits in a tracked-changes style. Review additions and deletions, then accept or reject each change, just like in a word processor.
Export
Export your proposal as a formatted document whenever you need to work offline or submit to the funder's portal.
Sharing
Share a read-only link with anyone (reviewers, mentors, or programme managers) so they can read your proposal without signing up.
What types of grants does it work with?
GrantorAI is funder-agnostic. It works with any grant call you can upload as a document. If the call document describes what the funder wants, the AI can work with it.
It works best when the call includes evaluation criteria and a submission form with defined sections. More detail in the grant call documents means better-aligned output.
Languages
The interface is in English, but your notes and ideas can be in any language. Generated content defaults to English; tell the AI to write in another language if you need it.
What the AI uses
GrantorAI works with the documents you provide: the grant call, the submission form, and your notes. It does not scrape evaluator reports or use external sources. The AI analyses your input, extracts requirements, and generates content aligned with the funder's criteria.
Your ownership and privacy
Your data is stored on encrypted servers in the EU. When you use AI features, relevant parts of your proposal are sent to one of our AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or Mistral). They do not use your data for model training and make no intellectual property claims on your content. You retain full ownership of everything you write and everything the AI generates. Full privacy policy and terms.
How scoring works
When you request feedback, the AI evaluates your draft against the funder's stated requirements and evaluation criteria. You get two levels of feedback:
- Per-section scores: each section is scored on alignment, completeness, and persuasiveness relative to the call.
- Holistic feedback: a context-aware assessment of your entire proposal, identifying gaps and strategic weaknesses across sections.
Scores are AI estimates, not predictions of panel outcomes. Use them as a guide for where to focus your revision time.
What GrantorAI doesn't do
GrantorAI does not guarantee funding. It cannot invent ideas you don't have or fill in sections you haven't provided input for. The AI structures, aligns, and polishes. The science has to come from you.
